This method also stimulates saliva production and helps maintain fluid intake in scouring calves. In contrast, if a calf drinks from a bucket, the oesophageal groove may not activate, allowing milk to enter the rumen, where it cannot be digested. This can lead to fermentation and scouring. Calves fed via a teat can gain up to an additional 1.4kg in weight by 12 weeks of age. Teat feeding mimics a calf’s natural suckling behavior, providing a more instinctive feeding experience.
